Understanding burnout (Maslach & Jackson 1981)

Burnout is a work-related syndrome recognized by the WHO (ICD-11, 2019). The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) is the most validated measure, used in 10,000+ studies. It measures three dimensions.

The 3 dimensions of burnout

  • Exhaustion (items 1-3): Emotional and physical depletion from work demands
  • Cynicism (items 4-6, 8): Detachment, negativity, and loss of meaning
  • Reduced Efficacy (items 7, 9, 10): Feeling incompetent or unproductive (reverse-scored)

Burnout facts (WHO/Gallup 2024)

  • 76% of workers experience burnout at least sometimes (Gallup)
  • 28% feel burned out "very often" or "always"
  • Highest-risk professions: healthcare, education, tech, social work
  • Burnout costs the global economy $322 billion/year in turnover and lost productivity
  • Recovery takes 1-3 years after clinical burnout (Bernier 1998)
