How much free time is normal?
The average adult has about 4–5 hours of free time per day (OECD Time Use Surveys). But parents of young children average only 2–3 hours, while retirees enjoy 7–8.
Average daily free time by life stage (ATUS/OECD 2023)
- Single, no kids: 5.5 hours/day
- Couple, no kids: 4.8 hours/day
- Parent (kids under 6): 2.5 hours/day — the "time crunch"
- Parent (kids 6–17): 3.5 hours/day
- Empty nester: 5.5 hours/day
- Retired: 7.5 hours/day
How people spend free time (BLS ATUS)
- Watching TV/streaming: 2.8 hours (55% of free time!)
- Socializing: 0.7 hours
- Exercise/sports: 0.3 hours
- Reading: 0.3 hours
- Hobbies/games: 0.3 hours
The free time paradox
Research from UPenn shows having too little free time (under 2 hrs) causes stress, but having too much (over 5 hrs) can reduce wellbeing if it's unstructured. The sweet spot is about 3.5–5 hours of quality leisure time.
