What is normal grip strength?

Grip strength is one of the best single measures of overall health and longevity. Research shows that weak grip strength is a stronger predictor of mortality than blood pressure. Average grip strength for men is about 46 kg and for women about 29 kg.

Average grip strength by age and sex (kg)

  • Men 20–29: 46 kg | Women: 29 kg
  • Men 30–39: 47 kg | Women: 30 kg
  • Men 40–49: 45 kg | Women: 28 kg
  • Men 50–59: 42 kg | Women: 26 kg
  • Men 60–69: 38 kg | Women: 23 kg

Why grip strength matters

A Lancet study of 140,000+ adults found that every 5 kg decrease in grip strength was associated with a 17% increased risk of cardiovascular death. Grip strength testing is now recommended as a routine vital sign by some physicians.
