6-8 times per day is considered normal by urologists. Waking up once at night is normal over age 60.
What's normal
- 4-6 times: Low end of normal — you might not be drinking enough
- 6-8 times: Textbook normal
- 8-10 times: Slightly frequent — common with high fluid intake or caffeine
- 10+ times: Frequent urination — consider seeing a doctor
Factors that affect frequency
- Caffeine and alcohol are diuretics — they make you go more
- Pregnancy increases frequency significantly
- Overactive bladder affects 33 million Americans
- Your bladder holds 400-600 ml — about 2 cups
