Are my savings normal for my age?

Compare your total savings to your age group average.

Average savings by age group — how do you compare?

Understanding where your savings fall relative to your peers is one of the most common financial questions. The challenge is that averages are misleading — a few ultra-wealthy individuals pull the average far above what most people actually have. That is why this tool shows your percentile (median-relative position), not just the average.

Key benchmarks (United States, Federal Reserve SCF 2022)

  • Under 35: Median savings $20,540 | Mean $107,400
  • 35–44: Median savings $45,740 | Mean $197,900
  • 45–54: Median savings $56,000 | Mean $247,200
  • 55–64: Median savings $74,100 | Mean $310,000
  • 65+: Median savings $87,000 | Mean $334,000

Notice how the mean is 3–5x higher than the median in every age group. The median is a far better benchmark for "normal."

Why savings vary so much by country

Household savings rates differ enormously. Germany and Switzerland have household savings rates around 10–13% of disposable income, while the US and UK historically hover around 3–8%. Social safety nets, pension systems, healthcare costs, and cultural attitudes all play a role.

What counts as "savings"?

This tool compares your liquid savings — bank accounts, savings accounts, money market funds, CDs, and easily accessible investments. It does not include home equity, retirement accounts (401k/IRA), or illiquid assets. For a broader view, try the Net Worth by Age comparison.
