What is a normal resting heart rate?

A normal resting heart rate (RHR) for adults ranges from 60 to 100 bpm, but well-conditioned athletes can have rates as low as 40 bpm. Lower is generally better — it means your heart is more efficient.

Resting heart rate categories (AHA)

  • Athlete: 40–54 bpm — excellent cardiovascular fitness
  • Excellent: 55–61 bpm
  • Good: 62–65 bpm
  • Above average: 66–69 bpm
  • Average: 70–73 bpm
  • Below average: 74–81 bpm
  • Poor: 82+ bpm

Factors that affect resting heart rate

  • Fitness level: Regular exercise lowers RHR
  • Stress and anxiety: Can raise RHR by 10–20 bpm
  • Caffeine and stimulants: Temporarily raises RHR
  • Medications: Beta-blockers lower it, decongestants raise it
  • Temperature: Heat increases RHR

A rising resting heart rate over time can be an early warning sign of declining cardiovascular health. Track it monthly for the best insight.
